On May 13th, 2025, governor of washington signed the SB 5628 Act, which revised the requirements for lead content in cookware.
Revision background:
On March 28th, 2024, Washington State passed the HB 1551 Act to limit the lead content in cookware and cookware components. The main provisions of the bill are as follows: From January 1, 2026, no manufacturer, retailer or wholesaler may manufacture, sell, offer for sale, distribute or distribute cookware or cookware components containing more than 5ppm of lead or lead compounds used in Washington State.
Latest requirements:
According to Act SB 5628, the application scope of lead content requirements has been revised from "cookware or cookware components" to "aluminum or brass cookware, aluminum or brass cookware components", and the limit value has been adjusted from 5ppm to 90 ppm (effective on January 1, 2026) and 10 ppm (effective on January 1, 2028). And from December 2030, after consultation with the health department, relevant departments can reduce the lead content requirement by 10ppm through rules if it is feasible for cookware and cookware component manufacturers.
