On April 20, 2026, the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) published Regulation (EU) 2026/859, adding 83 entry to Annex XVII of REACH, officially introduces restrictions on 2,4-dinitrotoluene. This Regulation shall enter into force on the twentieth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
In Annex XVII to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, the following entry is added:

2,4-dinitrotoluene has a wide range of applications, including but not limited to the following areas:
●It is used in the production of toluenediisocyanate (TDI), a raw material for flexible polyurethane foams;
●Intermediate include the use in the production of dyes and dyestuffs and rubber chemicals;
●Electronic devices;
●Ceramic articles;
●Refractory products;
●Automotive airbags;
●Seat belt pre-tensioners;
●Plastic bottles used in industrial settings for sample taking purposes;
●Propellants for military and civil small-arms ammunitions;
●Gelatinising-plasticising agent in explosive compositions.
